The city growth has led to some significant changes in their urban foundations. This are in some cases due to a catastrophe like the 1909 fire or important celebrations like the one of 1952, when Valdivia celebrated 400 years old.
Obviously the city´s founder couldn´t pass away without having something that remembers his figure, reason why in 1864 was founded the Pedro de Valdivia plaza, which was initially located in the Muelle street near the riverside, place where supposedly land the conqueror´s ship and later was consumed by the 1909 fire, the city took advantage of this catastrophe and re wrote the urban plans, ordering all the twisted streets. The mentioned plaza is no longer near the riverside as it was originally.
The commemoration of the city´s 400 years was the perfect moment to develop some pending projects, for one hand the improvement of the city´s connectivity and by other hand was the creation of new public places where people could enjoy themselves. Under this context and during the government of mayor German Saelzer B, it was inaugurated the embellishment and expansion of the plaza, where it was included the founder´s bust which was donated by the Spanish government. With this started the building of a new hotel and bridge (inaugurated in 1954) that share the same name, Pedro de Valdivia.
