Coliseum

Until the beginning of the XX century, the area where the coliseum is now located used to belong to the Harnecker Family where they had a big and beautiful park, now exists only a part of it. The place was inaugurated in 1966 and by 1996 was given the name of Antonio Azurmendy Riveros.

The coliseum has a total capacity of 3.700 people, although some records have showed that the coliseum have received over 5.000, especially for sports events.

In Valdivia people have played basketball since the 20s of the past century and have achieved to become one of the top cities where this sport is played.

In 1966, the 5th World Basketball Championship was supposed to be in Montevideo, Uruguay, but due to some political problems it was required a modification and it ended up to be the First Extraordinary Championship played in our city. Since then, Valdivia has been the capital of important sport events, like three South American male championships played during 1977-2001, because of the last championship the coliseum was fully remodeled.
